The Old Continent

Europe is the second smallest continent after Australia. It is part of the Eurasian landmass and is divided from Asia through the Ural Mountain based on political, historic and cultural grounds. There are fifty states in Europe where the biggest one is Russia and the smallest one- the Vatican.

Europe is often called “the old continent” due to its remarkable influence on global affairs. Certain European states had the leading role in world relationships from the 16th to the 20th century. Those countries established many colony states in Asia, South and North America, Australia and Africa. European conflicts grew into the two world wars that marked the great downfall of European civilization. After the Second World Wars the cold war between European nations and the US raged globally. That led to the creating of NATO, the Warsaw Pact and the European Union.

The continent has 731 million people which are about 11% of the global population. According to projections the proportion of European population in the world will decrease significantly in the next 40 years due to lower birth rates and negative growth in some parts of the continent. The majority of this growth rate is due to immigration. Most new Europeans come from Turkey, Morocco, Algeria, Ecuador, and other African states. Large groups of European descendents can be found in the Americas, Australia, New Zealand, and as minorities in Asia and Africa.

European languages are part of the Indo-European group and can be divided into three groups: Romance, Germanic, and Slavic. The rest of the European population speaks Baltic, Celtic, Uralic languages.

Religion has had a significant influence on the course of history in Europe. The continent has been the strongest bastion of Christianity for many centuries. Europeans brought Christianity to almost every corner of the world. The three main denominations within this religion are the Roman Catholicism, Protestantism and Eastern Orthodoxy. There are considerable amount of Muslims in Europe mostly in Eastern Europe and many among the immigrant population of Central and Western European states.
