Schengen Area

The Schengen Area is an organization created by the Schengen Agreement in the town of Schengen in 1985. It stands for an organization consisting of 25 states that operate with one international travel regulations for all other counties and no internal border control.

The Schengen rules later became part of the European Union regulations in 1999 with the Amsterdam Treaty. Currently, there are 25 member states- 22 of which are EU member states as well and Norway, Switzerland and Iceland. The only two European Union states that have no applied Schengen rules are the United Kingdom and Ireland. Romania, Bulgaria and Cyprus are in the process of meeting the criteria for joining the organization.

Currently, the Schengen Area includes over 400 million people and 4.3 million square kilometers. The agreement states that member nations have to abolish internal passport control and strengthen external control. Also, common policy on temporary stay of non-Schengen citizens, border control and jurisdiction matters are synchronized among the member states.

Cyprus has not yet joined the Schengen area due to the ongoing dispute between the state and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The country joined the EU in 2004 but the implementation of the Schengen agreement has been delayed until the resolution of the conflict.

Lichtenstein formerly had a free border agreement with the state of Switzerland. The country was expected to join the area in 2008 but did not due to some disputes with other member states.
