The Schengen Area is an organization created by the Schengen Agreement in the town of Schengen in 1985. It stands for an organization consisting of 25 states that operate with one international travel regulations for all other counties and no internal border control.

The Schengen rules later became part of the European Union regulations in 1999 with the Amsterdam Treaty. The agreement states that member nations have to abolish internal passport control and strengthen external control.
